BTW, it its open, get them to put a screen on it to keep critters out. Would be a pain to fish out a dead squirrel.

Oh, for crying out loud - how is the house heated and how is the water heated? Is there a basement or a closet with equipment that makes things warm? Any of these would be below the location of the chimney, probably on the lowest level of the house (including a crawl space.) If they are fueled by gas, coal or oil they are probably connected to that chimney. If the outside bricks are separating, the flue sections may also be separating and allowing carbon monoxide into the house.

If it is not totally electric, have whoever services you heating equipment check it first to find out what you need.

Thanks! I have gas heat (in the basement) and it is below that area (2 floors in between) - I have a carbon monoxide detector.

So, OP, you still haven't managed to cough up the important piece of info -

Is this chimney currently functional, or is it a leftover?

Not sure you need a chimney of you have a Carbon Monoxide detector. Perhaps someone here will know.

What? Say what? It has a screen on it, and it is made of bricks. What more do people want to know?

All these technical issues. Chhhheeees.

OP, if you want to educate yourself a little bit on the matter, go back a couple of issues in Fine Homebuilding and there is a whole article on deteriorated brick chimneys and how to deal with their repair. Not sure if you can do it, however, due to the screen on top. Is the screen wood or metal? They may have to go in from the bottom up.

Whether its even necessary to have the chimney in the first place. If its not necessary, you have a choice to either repair it or get rid of it.
