Yes, I know, how long is a piece of string.

There is a house I'm looking at. The kitchen badly needs renovation (the cabinets are already disintegrating).

The kitchen is not a big space. It's effectively a galley kitchen that was opened up to the adjoining dining room by the current owner, but retains the galley layout. Let's say there's 14 feet on one side, including the fridge, sink, dishwasher and stove, with upper and lower cabinets, and an 8 feet island between it and the dining room. There is also a separate small pantry (shallow closet, really).

What would be a decent ballpark figure for renovating the entire kitchen space, including new flooring (but not the dining room, which is fine). Consider using Bosch quality appliances and midrange cabinets and quartz countertops. Appliances would remain in the same place as the existing appliances.

The one other thing I'd like to do is to demolish the pantry/closet and replace it with floor to ceiling cabinets. This would add an extra 3 inches to the little corridor it faces, and makes all the difference in being able to punch through a doorway into the front hall on the other side of that space, giving the kitchen a direct access to the front of the house and front door rather than having to go via the dining and living rooms.

Can this be done for 20k? Or are you doubling over, laughing?

Mid-range cabinets, quartz, and Bosch? You are, unfortunately, significantly underestimating the cost.

And dose it need plumbing updated, or electrical how’s the floor, there’s no guessing how much until you get company over there to look at the mechanicals and the structure of the walls and floor. And what materials you want granite or Formica for the counter tops, cherry cabinets or cheap prefabricated ones. And tile or wood floor, top of the line appliances or midrange, and fancy light fixtures or Cheap single bulb ones. So it’s impossible to give you a quote because of depending in what part of the country you live in prices can vary widely.

Guesstimate: $250 per cabinet, assuming nothing special like farmhouse sink. $75 per sq ft quartz countertop, installed. $10 per sq ft tile floor installed (if sub floor needs work, it'll be more). Then add ons like cabinet crown, backsplash tile. Now spec out the appliances, sink and faucet. That's a rough idea of basic cost and you would have further install charges (cabinet guys, plumber, electrician).

Other considerations: permits, painting, plumbing, electrical, and prior damage repair (think leaks).

Your location matters. Your choices matter (high end this or that).

$20k sounds low, but there are too many variables to guess.

Based on my own kitchen remodeling projects, and on conversations with my step-daughter, who is an Interior Designer specializing in kitchens. Do you not think 20K sounds low?

Our 10x19 kitchen remodel, to bare studs, was $55,000 in 2015. Semi custom cabinets, quartz counter tops, no new floor, other than a few tiles we already had, and not including appliances (wife went super high end). That included new plumbing, relocating the water heater, new electrical, etc. The house dates from 1952, so there was some extra work there.

I renovated in 2016 (South Florida).
Kitchen 15x12 total cabinets length size.

High end cabinets from Lowes (installation included) - $12K
Quartz countertop from Lowes (installation included) - $9K, that's included huge waterfall island.
High end appliances - $7K (installed myself).

All of it was bought during Labor day sale (20-40% off).

Floors - tiled myself.

$28 total + floor tile cost.
