No - but it is the most reasonable assumption. Do you know of another switchable heat/cool source that has lights on the thermostat?
My non heat pump programmable t-stats use different colors to represent different things. Blue for cool, green for 'fan/econ' and red for heat. Gas furnaces and traditional AC systems
I think we should go back to more descriptive indicators. I'd suggest a small flame for heat. Not a picture of a small flame, an actual flame. You know, pilot light size. For cold you could pipe a liquid nitrogen line and emit just a wee bit, just enough to create a big icicle.

I can think of a more descriptive alternative, but it would be horribly sexist...
