I just bought some 3x12 subway tile for my kitchen backsplash and now think it could be too big, but I find the 3 x 6 boring, too common, and too short. 3 x 9 costs a lot more. Do you think 3 x 12 is too long for a kitchen backsplash?

It’s strictly a matter of personal preference, however from a design standpoint, a larger tile will make the space appear to be larger in size and it will also minimize the joints in between the tile and it will look to be a little less busier.

All in the eye of the beholder!

Personal choice.

Frankly, I wouldn't have subway tile at all, especially not the small ones.

3x12 is what I have in my kitchen. Obviously I love it.

Whatever you buy, get extra. If the style or color is discontinued and three tiles crack or whatever, you have to replace the whole thing because you will nto be able to get matching tiles.

What would you choose? I have white/light granite countertops with white cabinets.

Would they be white tiles? That will show every spot and splatter? All that grout to scrub? If you like that blindingly white hospital lab look guess that'll work. Sounds boring and sterile IMHO.

This is what I'm going to put in my kitchen (I'm just waiting for a cabinet install right now). It's Carrara Marble.

Terrible choice for a backsplash - even though such narrow tiles are quite common. The purpose of a backsplash is to have an easy to clean surface behind the stove; the more grout there is, the more difficult to clean the wall area will be. That means the larger the tiles are in both directions and the narrower the grout line is, the easier to accomplish the purpose for which they are installed.
