I get a lot of sun and don't want to worry about maintenance a bunch. Will painting hold up any better than staining? My deck gets A LOT of sun so I'm worried about the sun giving me issues.

Wood is no good long term. Better to get that pricey stuff that last 20+ years.

Both approaches all have issues. I know several people who have gotten rid of their decks and put in patios. I am going to do the same when mine needs replacement.

Wood is only the frame (which is unavoidable) and the support of the rails. I have composite on the floors & on top rails (where your hand touches), the rail poles are aluminum.

I figure that I might be able to manage those are that are wood since they'd receive less physical contact at least.

That is not an option. Would paint work be a good option for the rail frame?

Since it’s pressure treated wood I would recommend using a semi transparent stain and a couple of top quality ones would be TWP and Sikkens, however there are others that you should look into.

The problem with paint is that it is a surface coating on wood that has been injected with chemical preservatives, so it will will to be re-done much sooner than a stain treatment that will be better absorbed into the wood.

I would definitely go with a stained finish for appearance and longevity.

Thank you! By chance how soon can this be completed? I heard waiting a few months. Looking for a good resource regarding this process.

It’s difficult to get it just right, especially since the PT wood is in high demand and not sitting around much prior to being purchased.

I wouldn’t wait to long after it’s been installed since it can’t cause any harm doing it too soon and you could apply a second coat if the wood shows signs of dryness later on.

In a word- No.
Water, along with chemicals in PT lumber prevent paint from being a good protectant. An oil-based stain/sealer is your best choice.

As previously mentioned- and I have spec’d for many years- TWP is an excellent choice for staining and sealing.
On “new” decking material I always recommend using transparent stain/sealers. When wood gets old, stained, or otherwise in not good visual condition- then go with semi-transparent or solid stain/sealers.

Depending on which state you live in will determine which TWP you can get (it’s a VOC thang).

Don't paint it unless you're ready to commit to scraping sanding and repainting every three to six years in perpetuity.

If water soaks into the wood within a few minutes it's ready to stain. If it beads up on the surface then it's still too wet. Check the specific stain instructions for other requirements.
