My heat pump went out at a very bad time of the year when the temp last night was 25 degrees. Hate to see what the cost of fixing it will be, Electric heat pump is cheap here in Tennessee to run. Costs me about 100.00 dollars a month in the city limits. If I have to replace it I might switch to natural gas because it a lot better heat.

If you have NG available... YES! that is almost always the undisputed best choice to make.
For heat ...and hot water and the dryer and the stove too.

The "emergency" heat on a heat pump can be natural gas. During the coldest days, switch to it. When the outside temperature is over 50, use the heat pump. Best of both worlds. (Since you need central AC in Tennessee anyway, the up cost of a heat pump is small. Just be sure to get 3 bids from reputable installers.

...for a smoke?

On a more serious note- what exactly “went out”? The condenser unit, the air handler/furnace, the reversing valve (quite common)?

Do you have “emergency heat”?

...or was it a date?

At least he didn't say it ”blew up” like so many people talk about their cars.

Definitely choose NG if there is an option. I find it heats up the house faster and more comfortably than the heat pump portion.

You know how people always say ”the transmission blew up!” I ask, ”I hope no one was injured by shrapnel” to which I usually get a confused look.

However, many years ago, driving on the freeway one morning, I noticed first a big oil stain, then some pieces of aluminum, then gears in the roadway! Then an 18 wheeler sitting on the shoulder.

So I guess that was one time when ”the transmission blew up”. I'm guessing something failed and allowed it to shift into two gears at once.

You probably already checked; maybe just a fuse?

If you shopping for a gas unit for heating only - look into sealed combustion Rinnai wall unit: the smaller one could be found for $800, larger for $1800. Only 80% efficient but with no ducts and very simple install could be just the ticket

Could be propane or NG, don’t go for vent-free- will skip you the lecture, look into direct vent
