I was looking at buying a garage fridge and then I saw those reach-in commercial fridges. It will be in the garage off the kitchen so noise isn’t an issue, and the energy ratings I’ve read make them a bit less efficient - but more efficient than 2 fridges, especially older ones.

I see one that’s a bit over 2K, has a warranty honored in a residential setting and plenty of space.

Anyone buy one for their house?

Not quite, but my wife wants more refrigerator space and this seemed like a way to consolidate an existing garage fridge plus a drink fridge.

IMHO how the refrigerated space happens to be configured doesn't matter much. You'll still fill it up and want more. $2K just to have more cold drinks on hand at any particular moment? Pass. I'd rather have more flexible garage space.

Generally commercial refrigeration is not as energy efficient, but they provide more consistent and stable cooling. Consumer level refrigeration typically works on a thermostat that cycles the compressor on and off within a wider range of temperature (+/- 2-4 degrees). Commercial, wine, Subzero brand, and medical refrigeration often have a much tighter temperature range; therefore they provide more consistent cooling temperatures but run 3-5X more and use a bit more energy.

Repairs will likely be very costly in addition to a higher energy bill. I would expect a commercial fridge with no leakage to run about 5kWh-8kWh per day compared to a consumer Energy Star fridge would run about 2kWh.

The only problem would be if the garage gets cold. The way refrigerators (and freezers) work means they don't work well in cold weather. If the garage is attached to the house and it doesn't freeze out there, you should be fine.

I'm keeping the contact information for a company that can deliver a commercial freezer quickly. Many of the appliance places are out of freezers and the wait time to order one is long. I worry about having one of my freezers clonk out and not being able to get a replacement. If that happens, it doesn't matter how much it costs to get a replacement in 24 hours. ... and the commercial freezers are expensive.

In my garage I have a fridge and a freezer.. if either break it’s a few hundred bucks to get another. I buy the basic as can be no frills fridge and stand up freezer. I woild t buy a commercial fridge or freezer. It’s just money that doesn’t need to be spent.
Just buy a stand up fridge that has no freezer on top and a stand up freezer. Mine are packed with drinks milk ok and frozen stuff.
And they last long enough that it’s just as simple to buy another one if it’s too costly to repair.

I've never had a garage fridge...... I don't want it taking up space in my garage, nor do I want the expense of buying/running it so I can keep some extra beer/water/soda cold year round and some holiday extras like turkey or desserts.

I bought a larger fridge (22.5') for the kitchen. The smaller fridge (20') is out in the garage, next to the tool chest. I never thought of having an "auxiliary" fridge, but it sure does open up options. For example, I went to CostCo last week and bought 80 pounds of ground beef. (It was on sale!) I'd have a tough time fitting 80 pounds of anything, in my freezer, as there's already 40 pounds of chicken breasts and everything else, that goes into a freezer. But with 2 freezers, I still have room for a few gallons of ice cream! (Gotta have priorities, ya know!)

Anyway, now that I have 2 fridge/freezers, I can do a lot more, if need be.

Next, I might get a coupla chest freezers and a side of beef or 2...
