Besides mowing to mulch fallen leaves, when is the time you first need to cut to even out the lawn and where do you live (region)? Yesterday I mowed the lawn for the first time this year. Wasn’t long but it was uneven with patches of clover and a few thistle clumps. Live in south Louisiana and after that freeze we had recently the afternoon temperatures are in the 70s.

In Michigan we have a couple more months to go to even think about mowing the grass or anything doing with the lawn.

In central IL, checking back over my calendar, it's usually mid-April though it can vary 10 days in either direction.

Depending on how fast spring thaw goes it might not happen before the middle of June.

Our centipede hasn't awakened yet, but I notice the weeds are greening up. Mr G is chomping at the bit to get going on the lawn, but it’ll be another few weeks.

In south Florida, the mowing never stopped. In Vermont, it depended on the year, but mid-May was an average. Here, I could mow onion grass now, but I usually try to wait until close to April, and just deal with the taller weeds. Mind you, my cut area is more fields than a patch of lawn and takes hours to cut.

It’s usually May for us here in upstate, NY region. There is still 4-5’ of snow down by my mailbox and at least a foot in most of the rest of my yard. Turf stays wet for a while after the snow melts away so I have to be patient not to cause ruts and just wait ‘till it dries.

I usually get started with trimming the edges first, raking, and getting the garden ready to go. I’m excited this year to be putting sprinklers in my back yard. I aerated and seeded last fall so I’m hoping for a great lawn.

Dallas area
Will give it a once over this week to level everything out and chop some weeds. Usually the last week of March / first week of April is when the twice monthly mowing routine starts.
