I need a small drywall job, was told about the "thumbtack" by a semi-untrustworthy person.
Is the thumbtack app legit and how does it work?
It's really no better or worse than Angie's List or something similar. I've gotten recommendations for local contractors as well as ones that were totally out of my area. TBH, I've almost always gone with tried and true people even though I may have had to wait for a job to be scheduled and/or completed. I've never had good results from new contacts, no matter how glowing their reviews were.
It is legit. As with lots of these apps or websites, I think some of it varies regionally. Most recently we used HANDY.
Pretty sure we have used thumbtack, homeadvisor, angieslist and even lately been hearing people liking taskrabbit.
Also if you have a local FB group or Nextdoor you can try to get recommendations on there.
OP, I would try the Nextdoor app. This app is for people that live around your area. On it you will see people that make recommendations for various contractors/handyman. You can post on there as well to have someone reply to your current need.
Yep. It is legitimate. I have a contractor friend who uses it almost exclusively and stays very busy. One thing I like about it is the fact that the contractors there have all done background checks. If they haven't, then something is wrong. You can see their customer comments. It doesn't cost you anything to list your project. But it does cost them to see your listing. So take it seriously and make a decision if you want them to come out and give you a price or not. Try to make sure your listing is as complete and accurate as possible.

Agree. Nextdoor is a good place for neighbor referrals. I've had good results from a painter and an AC company that were recommended by neighbors.
