Can I replace just the knobs without having to take off the side latch?

Some brands use a “proprietary design” that maynot work with other brands- but, if you’re using the same brand, just a different style, you’re bueno!

However, if you’re changing finishes- change all of it.

If you look at the mounting plate on the door where the throw bolt is, you should see a name or logo. Then you’ll know what brand to look for to make the installation easy!

I just took off one set of knobs , some metal came out with them. Didn’t expect that ,I think I’ll take the whole thing that came out to home depo , I just don’t want to have to take that thing on the side .

I had doors in an older house that had non-standard bore hole and backset. I had to re-drill to use modern hardware. Rare but possible issue.

OP the very best thing you could do is post a picture, if you can figure out how to do it.

There have been a lot of designs through the years.

And don't for the love of pete go to home despot. Go to a REAL hardware store where there's someone working there that knows a screwdriver from a bus driver.

I'd take a picture to the store before I tried even one. If they tell you anything wrong, return it.

What you are calling the side latch. Can be different between different brands

But with my cordless screw drive. It actually take me less than 60 seconds to remove and install a new one.
That is with the knobs already removed.

So dont understand why you would not want to do that. 2 screws and pops right out.
