Sorry if this is a "good old days" were better posting..but...
We have a few years old major brand (Frigidaire) refrigerator and just about every shelf and drawer in the thing has broken.
And the replacement parts are sky-high. For example, the shelf over the crisper drawers cost us almost $100 to replace.
All the shelf frames are of thin plastic and use and cold crack and break them. We're an adult household we've given the frig gentle use.
Right now, both crisper drawers are cracked, the middle plastic shelf frame has just broken--we'll try some super glue to mend it...the shelf frame supporting the meat drawer is also broken--my husband "fixed" it with a clamp. Not pretty, but it works.
In the "good old days" the shelves were of metal or of beefy plastic not the junk thin stuff used today.
So, our frig will cost us about $300-$400 hundred in new pasts--or we can buy a new one and start the fun all over again.
I buy refrigerators with a 5/12 year warranty.
And, I have never had an interior part (such as a shelf) break.
Personally, I think my 2017 refrigerator is of the same or better quality as the 1987 version.
Add me to the list of people who has maybe had one shelf support crack in probably 35+ years of owning my own fridges. Never had a shelf or drawer break.
Tip: unless the problem is an emergency I time interior fridge/freezer chores during winter so its easier to keep the food cold...just stack it outside. Then I can let the appliance reach room temp, do whatever is needed without hurrying.
i have a built in made by kitchenaid. it was purchased by previous owner, somewhere around 2007-2008. works just fine. i think we have had the need to add coolant over the years. when i moved in, the ice dispenser wouldnt work but it made ice and the water dispenser worked. now the ice maker doesnt make ice and the water dispenser doesnt dispense water. it doesnt appear that finding replacement parts is possible. the appliance repair person said that we should just keep fixing it because new replacement fridges arent built to last nearly as long as what we have.
We've never had them break either. Maybe you got a lemon??
From other comments, maybe so...maybe it was a bad batch of plastic the day they built ours? It does keep food cold and that's a winning situation despite the innards cracking and breaking...
I bought a Frigidaire sight unseen last year because the special size i needed for my cottage (apartment) was not on display anywhere.
I hate it and it cost me $750. Nothing has broken but the top shelf has refrigeration parts in the way of storing tall things like a gallon of milk. It doesn't cool evenly, things stay much colder in the back, and veges can freeze in the vege drawer too, yet some other item in the front on the middle shelf will go bad early.
I also got to add another $50 in fees I found out because of the tarriffs to China. We Americans are paying those too, did we really think the Chinese would pay for that? Most appliances are made in China now.
