I’m looking for some insight into painting option. Plaster is obviously a superior alternative but it’s a messy and expensive process while paint seems like a quick and less expensive fix. Please reply if you had your pool painted or explored this method before going with plaster application.
Explored it. It does you no good if your plaster needs redoing because it is already damaged and will delaminate. If you are considering painting a recently replastered pool, its a good way to change the color to something you like. I ended up going with colored replaster and love it.
Our neighborhood pool was built in the 1950's. It's been repainted most every year that I've lived in the neighborhood, since 1997. It has not been replastered in that timeframe.
The pool sits idle from October to April. It's been covered during the idle period only for the past three or four years.
Some years, it's been drained, cleaned and repainted for its summer reopening. Other years, just cleaned.
The neighborhood discussed replastering this year, but the estimates were between $15k and $20k. We had serious leaks last year and the pool almost drained empty during its latest idle period. Over the past couple of weekends, a group of volunteers has cleaned and repainted and has sealed some noticeable gaps around the bottom drains. We're hoping those gaps were the leak sources.
Given this experience, I suggest repainting. If you must replaster, I'd wait until the off season to engage such work.
