I finally edged! I love it. I am giving myself a grade of B. I messed up quite a bit at first, a couple of youtube videos later, I got the hang of it. I can now cut a good clean line along the edge of the sidewalk w/ the weed eater.
The sidewalk now needs a good power washing. I am off to unpack that tool next. Stay tuned.

I would never use a weed eater to edge a sidewalk, etc. unless it is a string trimmer edger with at least one wheel. It will give you a much neater job and be much easier. Here are examples of what I'm describing:
My husband had multiple types of every tool known to man. But when I moved down to my little retirement home. I left 90% of them behind. I brought the string trimmer with me because it is more versatile and can perform a greater variety of jobs than the edgers. Maintaining/storing a separate edger for my 10ft of sidewalk would be overkill.
If I were a professional landscaper I would edge with an edger. As a homeowner I have edged with a weedeater for over 30 years with no trouble. Yes, the very first time you do it, it'll take a long time, but after that it'll go fast. You have to learn how to use the tool to get a neat result, no different from being able to cut a straight line with a hand saw or drive a nail straight without leaving bruises all round it.
So the weed eater has started to run hot and emit white smoke. I had the bright idea to work on it myself but turns out that weed wackers like to wack thumbs, too! Ow! Off it went to the repair shop.
Then I got a notice from the community that I had 60 days to pressure wash and edge my street front.
Having the community do it, is probably one of those 24 pages of services that I haven't read through yet.
It can't be that expensive. The truck came through and did the whole street except for my neighbor (who is also new) and I, in under 5min. But I don't know that I can justify paying to have it done. Pressure washing is basically just standing there and pointing. It is not like it is a lot of work. The edging is another issue. I have not an inconsiderable amount of street front. And I have not proved to be very proficient at edging w/ the weed wacker.
So I decided to get a 'real' edger. I got the Greenworks Pro 80V 8" Brushless Edger (ED80L00).
Oh my goodness! This falls under the "didn't know what I didn't know" category. I didn't know anything could be so satisfying and so fast.
Hmmm. I've edged all my life, and haven't encountered any challenges with it. Whether the old gas-powered kind, or the electric models, it's been an easy and trivial task.
I really appreciated this thread... Never even thought about edging before I read it... It was a learning curve. Here it is from nothing. To wacked like a bad hair cut. And now a month later, I am an edging aficionado.
I edge my yard and I do love the look of it. But dealing with my edge trimmer/weed eater sometimes drives me insane. All these years later I still have not mastered how to wind up the line. It always seems to get stuck about 6 times out of ten which ends up frustrating me and sometimes makes me not want to bother to do that final step of making the yard look pristine.
Delayed response, but… depending on your trimmer you can get a trim head that takes a six foot length of string. You just feed it in one side and out the other, then twist it until each side has about 6-8”. Takes about two minutes.

Need to spray weeds in the cracks jack.
