About 3-1/2 years ago we had to replace our oil boiler but the new one, a New Yorker, was only about $6k. Even with the 60 month financing at 5.99% it comes in under $10k.

Definitely get another quote.

I never touched it in the last 20+ years and it wasn't repaired before I "inherited" it when I bought the house, although I think that some of its efficiency diminished.
Things were made to last much longer then than now.

One problem I have is that my basement is damp and that has probably accelerated the deterioration of the coil. The entire area was a swamp before they put houses up. I had some basement people look at it and was told it would be $8000 for a system to guarantee a dry basement. Forget that! I have a sump pump and put up with some water down there in the spring.

If you already have a sump pump you could just set up a decent commercial quality dehumidifier to eliminate the normal level of damp and empty the effluent directly into the sump pit. The unit would also help dry up the water that occurs in the spring more quickly as well. It's a lot cheaper than the basement drainage system; I know, because I have both, one in each half of my basement.

I may have found a plumber who can replace the coil and gasket for $1300. I have sent him pictures but he hasn't actually seen it himself.

Update. I got my boiler coil replaced and avoided buying a new one. The guy who came over said those new high efficiency boilers aren't worth it. Expensive to repair and complicated. He compared it to getting a Ferrari vs a Volvo. Well hopefully I don't have to worry about it again for many years.
