I use my disposal for a lot of things since I don't want food waste stinking up the house or garbage cans. We only get our garbage picked up once a week and I'm in SW Florida where it's very, very hot so I try not to put food scraps in the garbage.

And for the waste that cannot be tossed in the disposal, the freezer is a good temporary landing area until it’s trash pickup day!

It would seem according to everyone that has posted that there isn't even any consensus on how the thing should be used.

There is the group that posted links and SWEARS it is okay to throw "almost" anything down it and swear that that is what they have been doing for decades with never a problem.

And then there is the other group which seems to be supported by the manufacturers users manuals that it should be only for the wee bit left after scrapping the plate into the garbage can. So basically, is a machine for those who are too squeamish to clean out what would normally end up in the sink strainer.

I will keep it covered with a strainer and avoid using the thing except for throwing it some ice every night. I don't want to be shoving broom handles anywhere and I don't mind cleaning the strainer.

Yeah, I thought disposals were to be used. I mean for things like potato peels, veggie scraps, etc., but, my plumber alerted me to the fact it is better not to put food through the pipes. So, actually reading through this I realize the purpose is more incidental that I had ever realized. Years ago I bought the top of the line and it can handle anything. It seized up once and I had to have an appliance repair guy out and it took quite a lot for him to unseize it (but, he manually unseized it). Too bad this repair guy was like a day away from retirement because I need to have him out for another refrigerator repair. Ugh! It's always something.

I have no idea what proper waste disposing is . . . I don't even cook.

I am far too lazy to babysit a $65 item. The next owner of the house can feel free to do what they like.

I won't proactively rip it out for no reason but the next time it rusts through (probably another 1-2 years due to the hard water) I will just have it removed not replaced. Sometimes I actually forget I can do what I like in my own house. . . the one I paid for . . . I don't need permission.

Keep an old bucket or bowl w/ a lid in the freezer and toss scraps in it. Doesn't stink up the freezer, and it's not messy. Dump it out in the trash bag on trash day. Nothing eww about it IMO. I don;t have trash pick up, I have to take it to the convenience center and can only get there once a week due to operating hours. I don't want stinky stuff sitting around in the house trash, and I don't like having an outside trash can (rats, raccoons, etc).
