That is the first step. Hire a couple of young strong kids and have a trailer as close to as you can get it.
This is also the time to pressure wash the structure, to apply an oil stain to the wood and set some rock underneath.

We are debating going no rails and if we decide we don't like it-we'll just add them later
Rail posts bolted to the outside should be avoided. Let in is a much nicer appearance. Either way... plan it.

bzzzt! wrong. Assess the joists, posts, and original workmanship in general.
Level? Square? Plumb? Secure to the ledger? Secure to the band? Blocked well?
All the joist tops/corners smooth and flat? Sure? What does your back up real carpenter friend say about it?

As mentioned above (post #5)... until you are at this point don't waste time talking to builders
or even planning what you might do (or not) to get to the next stage of things.

Purchased decking without lumber. It was $6320. Found labor at 4k in demo and install. I told them if we need any joists to head to HD and purchase what we need and we'll reimburse. Decking delivered 8/25 and new deck starts 9/1. So excited!
