Be care on mounting. Many mount them too low and the letter carrier will then drop most magazines and bulky pieces on your porch to save the time and wear on the mail of forcing it in to be cut and torn by the privacy shield.
Oh wow. You have a mail delivery person who will walk right up to your door? They leave my mail at the end of the block and at my son's last place he had to go over a mile to where they delivered his mail.
Yea, Mr Northern Idaho, us city folk get all kinds of amenities.

I had that and changed to a mail box next to the door.
There always was some draft and
I didn't want a stranger to peek into my home. Or a prankster to throw something nasty or dangerous inside. There could be a security issues too.(not burglar-proof door and insurance)
Also, how people give mail back to a mailman?
I didn't like that concept at all.

Ha! This is funny. How different we all are. I grew up apartment living. Mail was always behind a locked central mailbox. Moved to condos with mom, same thing. Central locked location. Met wife, moved in with her and she has a mail slot on her door. We got married, bought a house in Cleveland, mail slot next to the door.
(Also had dog as previous poster that would attack the mail )
We never had issues with people looking in or throwing things in or... a garden hose?!? Someone did NOT like you Mathjak.
Moved to the suburbs a few years ago and I have a ... mailbox on the street. It took me awhile to get over this. This is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of re: owning a home. A mailbox... on the street?!? Anyone can just... walk up and take your mail. You're worried about someone.... looking in your mail slot... to look at... your closed closet door... or your foyer or... but a mailbox just out there in public freely accessible to anyone at any time?!? THIS you're ok with? And then on Saturday you have to.... go outside to get your mail? Before, I didn't have to put clothes on to get my mail. Talk about convenient! I still think it's ridiculous and would love my old mail slot.

There are these places called "Post Offices". A lot of communities have things called "Public Mailboxes", too. I would also just take mail to work and drop it in the outbox there. Now I do live in a larger city so these amenities are not far away. So for a lot of people, it really wasn't hard at all. And sure, having a mailbox today, I do get the convenience. But... as little as I mail things today in this modern age?
Gimme my mail slot back!!!

Not uncommon if you live in a city with older housing stock, especially those that have a large amount of street parking. Our mailperson used to park at one end of the street, walk down one side delivering, back the other, wash/rinse/repeat. But, in 150 yards of street they had 15 houses, possibly more since some of them were likely duplexes. Even my apartment which was the only apartment building on the street, an 8 unit two floor building, had mailboxes right outside the door. In my current suburban neighborhood it's probably 10x that to deliver the same number of homes, so, the mail carrier drives up to the box.
But it seems that the newer developments are going to apartment-style cluster boxes that are on the end of the street.
I do understand that in the modern world, the need for efficiency trumps "what we're used to."

I have a door with mail slot, and I don't understand how that "hood" helps with privacy exactly.
I can see how it would keep the mail closer to the door as it falls inside because it's guiding the angle and trajectory of the mail as it falls.
But what's that have to do with privacy exactly?
