I removed old tile around fireplace. Was ordinary sheetrock.
That’s a pretty standard setup with prefab fireplaces.
Can I use ordinary sheetrock to close around fireplace then tile over sheetrock?
Well yes! That’s just what you stated previously.
I know I need type x sheetrock if it is finished surface around fireplace but here it is under tile.
No; you can’t do that. Type X drywall still has combustible covering (paper). There are code restrictions for “non-combustible” materials- placement, distance, etc.
Fireplace rarely used
Why not just use a cement board product which is a great substrate for tile and same thickness as the drywall?
