It’s over the stove , if that’s what otr means Over the range ?
Microwaves that are installed over a range top are called OTR microwaves. Stove top or range top - whatever. Typically the "OTR" is the nomenclature used for these types.
So is that what you are talking about?? That is a whole different animal than a counter model. I have never had one so I could not tell you what sort of maintenance is required. I have an actual range hood, and it does have removable grease filters that I occasionally remove and run through the dishwasher.

Yep your right I guess it’s called an OTR micro , that’s the only kind I’ve had over the years .
I know what OP is talking about. There should be a carbon filter somewhere before the air blows out. Not the metal mesh ones under the micro. I have no idea how to get to it either... hope someone knows here. Either way, these filters are pretty useless so I just don't cook greasy things in the house at all.
I'm taking it you read that article a few days ago that I also read about a microwave having a filter. I had no idea microwaves had filters. IIRC, it's just to filter out the smells so I don't think it does any harm in not changing it. My microwave is 18 years old and all I've ever done is wipe the inside occasionally. I don't even know if it has a filter (not all do) and it's been working great.

Yes that’s what made me ask about the filters , I think the article was in the Daily Mail .
The manual that came with the OTR has a section on the top front filter, the charcoal-type one - I also have the mesh ones below and and just run them through the dishwasher. The top front is a little trickier to get to as the things to push don't really push - Just do a search on your brand and model and filter change.
