For those like me who lack the interior design or creativity gene, there are magazines (or the interwebs). Cut out pictures of things you like and try to copy them. I get a Do It Yourself magazine from Better Homes and they have all kinds of fairly easy projects one could try.
Take measurements of spaces in your home where you might use something new and keep them in a little notebook in your purse, along with a tape measure. then if you come upon something that might work in your space, your ready.
Yesterday when I was out, speakin' of which, there was a pretty old armchair on the side of the road 'free.' It was wood, as far as I could tell, the upholtery was in terrible shape but I could see those brass tacks/rivets so figured it must have been a nice piece at one time. If I'd had a place for it, I would have gotten out of the car and taken a further look.
