We purchased a 28cu unit last year and it was very cold within 4 hours after installation. While it was cooling down we put the contents from our temporarily stored perishables into a camping cooler, using a $1.99 bag ice from Circle K to keep it cool. Never a problem.
I've never heard or seen refers delivered laying down from any delivery services. That seems to be a no no in the industry.
If you're concerned about the food, then stand the new fridge upright and give it the recommended time for all the oil to drain back to the compressor. Then put it out in the middle of the kitchen and plug it in with an extension cord. When it's cold, move all the food, take the old one out, slide the new one into the spot, done.
I try to educate myself by reading reviews and looking at display models in various stores. Then, I wait till the next big sale and buy then. Make sure the seller offers a good deal on delivery, installation, and removes your old appliance for you. Most major retailers do this.
We start using our refrigerator as soon as it is fully installed. If you are holding food in a cooler, maybe you’ll wait an hour or so?
I'll respond to this thread, as it's your most recent. If you have an 18 year old appliance (ANY appliance), you're on "barrowed time." I'd start looking for a replacement NOW. the reason for this, is that COVID has pretty much killed the appliance supply line, so it may take a few months to actually get what you want. Instead of settling for what's available.
At least this is how it's been, the last 18 months...
I have to agree with this. We've had two neighbors who needed to get a new appliance in the last few months; both ended up getting a much higher end model than they wanted with the concurrent MUCH higher price than they wanted to pay. But that's all they could get quickly.
I've bought our last few appliances on line at AJ Madison. New washing machine, new refrigerator, and something else I can't remember.
Zitsky, I suspect you know me well enough to know that I'm an admitted cheapskate and a bit of a compulsive researcher. Any future purchases will be from AJ Madison, unless MAYBE Costco has what I want for a better price. (BTW, Madison used to adjust the price downwards or throw in a free extended warranty. if you asked. Now, who knows.)
Going to BestBuy is a dreadful shopping experience. HD and Lowe's are okay, but I'll save my energy, time and gasoline for a better purpose.
once you stand it up, it take just a couple minute for the oil in the freon to drain back down, so no more than 30 minute you can load your fridge, by the time it take to hook the water to your ice maker, its ready to plug in. the oil is just a couple oz. and the freon will push it through in seconds, you just dont want all that oil in one place when the compressor starts
Take your old fridge to the garage the day your new fridge arrives.
Swap the food when your new fridge is cold. Suggestion - put some already cold non perishable items in the new fridge right away (soda for example) to start holding the cold.
Unplug, defrost, clean and sell/give away/ toss old fridge.
Stay away from Samsung Fridges. They have problems especially the ice makers.
Also bad customer service. Google them about problems.
All I can tell you is that I have a Samsung fridge that is about three years old and it's been great. I will add that there was one problem, which is now resolved fully. I have the screen on the front, which mirrors my phone, and the provider of the app the screen uses changed. For a short amount of time, I couldn't add any photos and my calendar wouldn't sync. This has been addressed now and I'm fully operational again.
Zero issues with the fridge itself or the ice maker. Overall I'm very pleased.

I have bought from AJ Madison in the past, too. Found better deals at Plessers and totally happy with price and delivery. Just another option!
