So my most important AC unit seems to have died and I had a company come quote me a replacement. It is a 5 ton unit. I replaced a 3.5 ton unit for $4,300 about 5 years ago. This is significantly larger and 5 years later but I wasnt really expecting $9,100 for the quote. Ouchie! Have a few companies scheduled to come tomorrow.

Yeah - you're paying about $4000 for the labor 'warranty' - built into their resale price of the unit.

You can order one yourself for about half (includes 10yr parts warranty, but not labor warranty) - https://iwae.com/shop/5-ton-16-seer-...n-ha12419.html

The one you posted is 16 SEER, the one they quoted was 14 SEER.

I found this:

Why are you changing from a 3.5 to a 5?

I don't know much about a/c but that seems odd to me.

It is location dependent but I can say with 100% certainty prices have increased greatly since Covid.

I paid $2850 a couple years ago for an easy install, 2 ton straight cool in Florida (prices are less in Florida). Just got quoted for a super easy install to replace a 1.5 ton straight cool unit for $3850. These are basic economy units.

Replaced a 2 ton heat pump unit last year in Georgia with a mid grade Carrier model and it too was an easy install, cost was $6550. My recently son replaced a 2 ton heat pump in Alabama and he paid about the same.

Also replaced a 3 ton heat pump (basic economy model easy install) in August 2021 in Florida. $5775.

Prices vary based on location but they are up quite a bit everywhere.

We have hot and humid here, so a smaller unit runs more and dries the house. Which I prefer. A larger unit run less and you get more humidity.

I much prefer window units in the bedrooms and when you close the door at night you only pay to cool the bedrooms. The open the doors in the day and let all the dry air out. The house stays much drier.

So for three bedroom only units you could pay much less. Maybe $6000 or less for through the wall units.

This unit covers our entire 2nd floor, I have 2 units covering the first floor (and we tapped into one of them for the basement). The 2nd floor is our bedrooms which makes it the most important and also gets the most heat up there. It runs a lot as we sleep with it set at 65 degrees.

Window units would be an eyesore, nobody has them in my town. I doubt that mini split system would work, we are talking about a lot of space and a lot of rooms.
