Cushions like those tend to be firmer, not mushy, and the extra structure probably lengthens their useful life. The shape also allows a little more ventilation between the sitter and the seat. Nicer in hot weather.
Unless the cushions are old and worn out or just very cheaply made you shouldn't 'feel' the tufts, no more than you 'feel' the tread patterns on the bottoms of your shoes.
I have a sofa like the one in the linked picture. It's called a Chesterfield and it's very comfortable. Our accent pillows are not button tufted. I find them overstuffed and in the way. They get tossed on one of the chairs.
