Are you saying that your sewer lines runs through the back yard?
Or that you have a 20x20 deck in the front?
Nope. All drains are within 8ft from the front of wall of the house. The kitchen sink and both bathrooms all face the front. The washing machine is in the garage about 10 feet setback from the front of the house but has its own clear out. The main sewer line is about 3' underground and runs diagonally from the center of the house down, underneath the front deck, and under the corner of my driveway where it connects to the city's line. My sewer line runs the slope at the front of the house which appears to be about an 8' rise with a 25' run...our driveway is like the hills of San Francisco.
We've got landscape drainage in the backyard, but runs out to the street gutter after passing through a french drain.
Are you in the city limits? I thought city water depts are responsible for maintaining sewer to your house. Maybe your bylaws are different where you live. Don't spend anything before you call them and ask questions.
So, this week’s grocery list has something to do with a sewer line’s location? Good to know!
…somehow I don’t get the rationale. See what I did there!???
…whatever-

We replaced a few years ago, as ceramic lines had major damage; total bill was $20K including main line replacement.
However, a sidewalk and the street had to be dug up(and the driveway!);and then re-paved. This was included in the cost, as our city offered zero financial assistance.
We had an earthquake here as well, and am fairly certain that damaged the old ceramic line; as I cannot imagine such brittle material holding up to seismic events.

Where the exact demarcation line is depends on the local system. Around here the home owner is responsible out to a clean out near the property line.
