So my old home inspection sited this. I bought a P trap and tried to put it in but it stated it was for the wall, not floor. Also I am on public sewer, not septic

Now I don't smell gasses and I have opened it up and it certainly does trap, I don't even know if air gets down there to be honest. It just seems to me like everything I have seen looks like P traps go to the wall. If it *Really* needs to be in a P formation I've seen some flexible material but I have not seen any pvc P traps to the floor. Any ideas?

There are two basic ways to eliminate a S-trap with a P-trap.

1. A P-trap with an elbow

2. A P-trap with a sanitary tee and an AAV

Number 1 is the least expensive; but also the most likely to not work because of the location of the down pipe in relation to the sink drain. This can also depend on if it’s a kitchen sink versus a bath sink. Number 2 may cost a few dollars more, but it’s probably the easiest to actually perform with the least amount of space taken with additional pipe.

"P" traps can be configured to go to the floor....easy job for a plumber or a knowledgeable DIYr. There are specific rules that have to be followed. Using an air admittance valve is a common method, however, these valves do fail from time to time.
"S" traps were common in older houses but eliminated because of poor performance (siphoning). That said, if you've seen no issues with your "S" trap, why change it?
