I have a fridge whose motor is making noise. It is not the fan, but the motor (I presume; arrow pointing in the picture). When plugged in, the motor produces a rattling noise, and when I pull the plug off, I can hear something falls to the bottom of the spherical container.

What could be the problem? Is it DIY fixable?

It's just a $700 fridge, but replacing can be a pain as it is on 3rd floor. So if possible I hope to fix it.

Fridge motor has something lose and making noise. Fix or replace?-fridge-noise.jpg

That is the hermetically sealed compressor-

Is it actually cooling? If not- it’s shot!
If it is cooling, but making the racket- it maybe down on refrigerant or oil. It’s probably about to go south. A new compressor isn’t a lot of money- but the labor & refrigerant will run that bill up fast.

Yes it's the compressor. I ended up buying a new fridge. We have this outlet store that sells cosmetically defected appliances. Any rejected deliveries can end up here. A couple dings here and there, and price is halved for a new refrigerator. I bought a brand new $1000 Whirpool fridge for $550. The blemish is just a few almost invisible scratches at the bottom of the door. I think it beats spending $250 on a repair.

When it comes to appliances, it seems the manu's have figured out the time frame just AFTER their warranty runs out, to need parts/service. This only applies to newer appliances. A 50 year old Kelvinator is still running, but a 3 year old Samsung, is junk. Go figure.

I think you were probably low on the estimate to repair that thing.

What I want to know is just how long was that thing in service at your house? That's a whole (looks up the term for a group of rabbits) Colony of dust bunnies.

Rental unit so it gets no attention unless it breaks. I think that fridge has been there for 10+ years. Well worth the $500.

I will still tinker with the old fridge to see if I can fix it. If so, I can use a 2nd fridge in my own garage.

Well, the dust was unlikely to be related to the failure. Sounds like in the sealed system and while dust can trap more heat.. I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Again, you get the scratch and dent models.. I think you'll likely be better off getting one of those for your garage, too.
