Does anyone have a recommendation for a super rugged hose reel that can that can last more than 2 years at least? All those plastic hose reels, like the Suncast brand, all become bleached, plastic starts to crack and the crank doesn't even work. This hose reel stays on the south side of the house with strong NC summer heat and humidity, where I use it frequently for the garden and power washing. The Suncast hose reels are not cheap either, around $40 that hardly last 2 years.

How about this thing, Gorilla brand - with mostly metal construction, aluminum frame, brass fittings and the plastic parts seem heavier.

You could purchase a cover for the hose and reel similar to a generator cover. I bought a polyester cover for my portable generator here in Florida. The cover cost only about $14 and lasted 2 or 3 years here in this hot Florida sun. I just replaced it a few months ago.

Look on Amazon for generator covers and find the size you need. Most of them have drawstrings around the bottom and snap closures on the sides so that you can snug it down if it isn't a perfect fit.

The cover does a great job of protecting what's underneath from the fading and deterioration caused by the sun.

I'd go with metal too. IIRC its often the combination of UV and temperature that eventually kills off outdoor plastics. Even if a plastic reel was covered, the full sun/heat exposure on the south side of a house day in, day out, week after week, year after year still might shorten its useful life. Some rust resistant/rust free metal alloy would seem the best choice.

My Mom lives in Florida with a southeast exposure and went through the same until she got one of the house mounted Eley products at around $200. It has a ten-year warranty and is virtually plastic-free, plus it's an aluminum product so it doesn't rust.

Aluminum DOES oxidize. Just like iron, but differently.
