I have to a buy a new one to replace mine. Is this necessary? I'm wondering if I can continue to wash and dry clothes on the machine without it.

This is what it looks like below:

I've been washing clothes fine without it.

Water pressure can cause the hose to work its way out of the drain and empty the washer onto your floor.

I would use it, but it's your choice.

This happened to me once. Fortunately I was sitting about 10 feet away and caught it quickly. There was still a LOT of water to mop up.

Mine has never had this… But it Seems easy to solve - you could use any string or zip tie

One should always keep a supply of different sized zip ties on hand, they are cheap.
