I once had a lawn service for several years. I didn't give them raises, they simply offered a service each year at a quoted rate.
The first year, they quoted me a rate per lawn cut, and I agreed to it by signing a form they sent me. The second year, they quoted me the same rate on a new form, but added a surcharge for higher gasoline prices. The third year, they simply raised the rate per lawn cut on the yearly form.
By the fourth year, the guys running the business shut it down (retired, moved on to another line of work?), and I didn't seek out a new service.
We have immigrants ,they have no pricing power, people just pay them cash.
BUt they must have done fine ,based on the tools they have.
Some like mine also do landscaping and misc handiwork, once he chopped down a tree for me.
We have an agreed upon price every year.
They set the price based on the services required.
No immigrants here. No cash transactions. They come once a week, we get billed monthly.
Around here there are a multitude of lawn services. Seems like anyone who can come up with a mower, a trimmer, a trailer, and something to pull it all with becomes a "landscaper/lawn" service. They beat each other up over price, such that i can't believe any of them make much money.
I do my own, BUT, if i had found someone who did an excellent job i would endeavor to keep them and pay them fairly. The going wage around here for unskilled labor is somewhere between $12 and $15 per hour. I had a guy who helped me with yard work, and i paid him $20 per hour. He worked super hard, was very pleasant to have around, and kept things clean and tidy. Well worth the extra money to keep him around.
So, OP, if you have a good lawn care guy, pay him to stay around and do a good job. Otherwise, there seems to be a line of these guys around who will gladly fill in for those that fall by the wayside.
Ours is a company that comes in every other Tuesday but we pay monthly. They leave an invoice on our back patio. They haven't gone up in a couple years, but in any case it's up to their boss or the owner of their company to give them raises. They aren't our employees.
