What else can help with the shoe-type smells and probably all the moisture in the summer time? How about those carbon bags off Amazon? I remember using them years ago but didn't notice much difference. People suggested Damp Rid but has to be replaced every month. Any other suggestions?

There are inserts made specifically for dancers' shoes called "DryPointe". You can look them up online. They are rechargeable.

Stuff the dance shoes with paper:you could use newspaper but the ink may rub off and end up on the inside

Perhaps brown paper bags or white wrapping tissues? Stuff the shoes very tightly.
You could very lightly spray ethanol alcohol inside shoes if they are very stinky then stuff with the paper and keep it overnight

The shoes should be dry and not smell in the morning.

The paper could be reused, let it dry out during a day.

Inexpensive to try.

Is there any way to place those shoes away from the bedrooms?
Hallway? Better to not keep any shoes in the bedrooms, unhygienic

Get them some large Ziploc bags or a couple of small plastic storage totes and have them put the shoes in there as soon as they take them off. Also a can of Lysol to spray them down with first to prevent mold and mildew from forming if they're damp.

They will never dry or air out stored in closed plastic containers. The solution is to put up a rack with room for all the shoes, and teach the dancers when they take off the shoes, put them on the rack rather than "throw them into the room".

Get the DryPointe product for them as recommended, and remind them to put it in the shoes first.

I used to buy a product called Skunkies that worked great, not sure if they still make those.

Cramming damp leather hiking/work boots full of newspaper every evening when I need to wear them the next day has been my drying go-to.

If you're concerned about newsprint stains you can test which type of ink (soy vs petroleum based) that particular publication uses. Rub your fingers across the print a few times. If the ink doesn't smudge it won't transfer to the shoes. Part of that equation is how "fresh" the newsprint is. Obviously, ink on paper that's been sitting around longer has time to cure more thoroughly so it is less likely to smudge. Stockpile some and teach the kids to stuff their shoes after they take them off for the day.
