Looking for a hardwood floor steam cleaner. I see a whole myriad of products, and I guess the thing is, that I want to use one that will spit out the least amount of water and/or moisture. At least, that's what I think. And one that actually works. My floors aren't all that dirty; it's not like I have this grime and stuff to pick up; I just want to keep them clean and don't want to use a dry mop with hw floor spray.
I've lived in two houses with hardwoods. Never used steam. If I felt the need to sanitize for some reason, I just used a room temp cleaner that has sanitizing properties. There are simple household cleaners than can do this. If the sanitizing aspect of steam is what you want, Bona makes a sanitizing cleaner for hardwood.

Yes. I have a steam cleaner and have used it many times on my hardwood floors. They are very easy to use - much less effort than mopping but I like to mop and then use the steam cleaner - and I'm too lazy to do both so I don't use it much. But it does not harm hardwood floors.
I believe steam DOES harm hardwood. If your floors are rather new and newly sealed with varnish or some kind of poly something or other, you might get away with it for awhile. But moisture brings the grain up on wood, so sooner or later you will have splinters coming up, and that's the beginning of the end. You will not find a single floor expert ANYWHERE telling you to steam your wood floor.
Never Ever, Ever Never use a steam cleaner on "hardwood flooring"!!!!

I remember when these cleaners were not available to the general public, and were very expensive. A couple of fellows came into the Miracle Theater in Coral Gables to demonstrate one for us. They were comical, dressed in white lab coats and acting like they had discovered soap. They were doing a fair job of demonstrating how some of the popcorn oil residue could be removed, but then one of them made the mistake of trying to clean one of the old wooden mopboards. It got darker, and worse looking, and looking like Dorian Gray's picture, at which point I thanked them for the demonstration and sent them packing.
