I would use the lightest color that is predominant in the granite. If the granite is pretty busy in appearance stay simple with the tile pattern.

what i was trying to find was a pic of something my freind did in her kitchen. she has cherry cabinets, black granite and the back splash is a "toupe" colored stone. above the stove is a 3d vase of grapes made by putting about 6 tiles together---it looks amazing and i cant imagine it will ever go out of style

I don't know of any websites, but go to your local hardware store (lowe's, home depot etc) and check out their displays. Model homes are also good inspirations. We did tumbled marble tile ourselves. We first paid someone to teach us how and they did all the cutting. We later did the butler's pantry ourselves with a $50 tile cutter! ha! Our original quote for the tile was $6000. We wound up spending $1300 all together by doing it ourselves.

We also used tumbled marble. I like the subway tile. I stuck to a beige color because the countertop is mostly brown. I think you could use any color beige and it would look good but I prefer the lighter colors.

Here's the most comprehensive collection of tile you could imagine-
Walker Zanger
They have an inspiration page that you can drool over. Forget about HD & Lowes, That selection is sooooooooooo limited you'll pull your hair out trying to put something together.
Another idea- I did one project with cultured stone (going to do it in my own house). Yes; that right, "cultured stone" the same fake stuff builders use on the outside of a home.

Just firing blindly, but I have seen a slate mosaic tile backsplash over dark granite that looked incredible. What are the floors and cabinets?
