[quote=faithfulFrank;4061714]I doubt if you would need to replace it. The bigger question is how much do you have.

Could you please tell me whether fiberglass is better than cellulose.
I think fiber glass is better becasue I saw an attic that the insulation had turned to black dust, what was that? I was thinking it was the old type of cellulose.
I already have fiberglass bate in the attic.
Also what is the best way to block the insulation from going out to the soffet? Thanks

That black dust you mention is probably nothing to do with insulation. More than likely it is due to a reroofing job. Very common, tons of black looking crap all over the place. Especially if the roof has been stripped. Sweeping and pounding gets every lil bit down in the attic as they clean up after the strip. Always close your windows on a roofing strip job. Will get it all over the house if the windows are open. You see lots of attics with the stuff, can be pretty fithy crawling around in older houses.

I've never seen cellulose "break down" in any manner. It works as it always did. It will burn if you do extremely stupid stuff.

The best way to block the insulation from getting in the soffit vent path is to put temporary cardboard guards that you can make out of any box. Them insulation dudes will always get it wrong. Once they are gone, go pull the guards yourself and arrange the insulation in that area by hand. Can be a real mess if it does get down in the wrong place. Can attempt to vacuum, never pleasant task.
