Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, all over, more sometimes when it ___, etc..? You aren't giving nearly enough info. Based on what you have presented, your husband is the prime suspect.

It seems to be the strongest on the basement level, which has the main entryway, garage, laundry room & boiler. It seems to get worse as the weather gets warmer, even though we have the a/c on high. My husband thinks it might be from the cardboard boxes we have stored in the garage (we just moved in a few months ago & are still unpacking). But the boxes themselves don't seem to have that smell, so that seems unlikely to me.

Do you have a corn plant? Is it blooming?
You'd be surprised, if you have never experienced the fragrance of a blooming corn plant. It's just as you described it.

Maybe you have a strange musty sweet smelling mould. Could be worse, you could have the really foul smelling mould. Might just be an outside plant or weed blooming.

I'd start with the laundry room. Specifically, removing the dryer vent and cleaning out any old lint. Moving the washer and dryer could expose some surprises as well. My next investigation would be the drain pan of the AC coil and the area under it. There is an aspergillis mold that is common in AC coils and pans. Keep nosing around to try to find where it is strongest.
