Both of those brands seem to have a good reputation but Frigdidaire is most highly rated from people I have known that have owned both brands.
Years ago Sears sold one that was called Coldspot. They lasted forever. Since Sears went to the Kenmore brand the quality has went south.
We have always had Whirlpool and love/loved them...and ours have always been the side-by-side. I love having the ice maker in the door giving us more freezer room.
you can check the info in consumer reports for their best rated brands. they give a fairly good indication of repair history etc. we have had good luck with whirlpool, GE, and kenmore. We have changed frig's just to update. be sure to look for the energy star ratings! over the long run, this will save in operating costs.
I have a Kenmore side by side. I think it's about 25 cu ft. I bought it ten years ago and have never had a problem with it. But my friend just bought one about 8 months ago and she's had the Sears guys come out four times in the last month because of some seal in her freezer. I used the information provided in Consumer Reports when deciding which brand to get.
Our current home came with a brand-new GE Monogram side-by-side. Worked great for about a year, then all of a sudden, kablooey. The fridge side refused to go below 45 while the freezer side refused to go above -15.
GE was very unresponsive. First, it's durn near impossible to even speak with a human, and then I kept getting passed around and having to explain the whole situation over and over again. Finally got a tech out who tested and fiddled and got things under control.
For about a month.
Bottom line, it took 3 more tech visits (and 2 complete throw-out-everything-in-both-sides episodes) over the space of about 6 months before GE agreed that there was something defective about the fridge. Maybe what convinced them was when the fridge side went up to 54 . They eventually replaced it last year. This new one works fine so far but you can believe I watch the temp gauges like a hawk.
Based on our experiences with them, I cannot recommend GE.
Bought a GE energy-saver top/bottom fridge/freezer last year... Had a faulty thermostat... Took too many phone calls, and over 3 service visits to get it fixed. The locally contracted company for service work showed me his "job list for the day" - 8 homes, 7 were GE products - and stated this was his usual type of listing...
