MCD4 you are AWESOME! Thank you!! Thats EXACTLY what I wanted but I didn't know it even existed!!! I will definitely tear down my awning now. I figured out the other reason why my house is so dark inside. I had thought it was because of the awning but I discovered last week when I went to clean it that one side of the sliding glass doors is smoked glass!! has anyone seen that before??

Even if this patio cover is somewhat expensive, it beats the cost and hassle of having to put in skylights for more light inside!

I would put up wood posts and remove that awning and put up a huge trellis across the whole area where the awning was. You can hang plants and also hang some outdoor curtains to the posts for a cozy feeling....The wood trellis will let the light in but also give you some shade. If you want you could cover part of the trellis with aluminum roofing!

If you're wanting to replace it, how about building a pergola??? One of the poster's picture / design is built utilizing some kind of hollow "columns" that might cover up those supports that you don't like...
