I have a deepish gouge in the hardwood floor in my kitchen. No idea how it got there. What can I do? It's probably 1/8" deep. Can I fill it with something? It's really not pretty, and I don't want it to get worse or cut anyone. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!!

I cover up gouges with crayola crayons to match the finish.
Buff out with a soft cloth.
How can it cut someone?

Thanks for the crayon tip! I never thought of that! I was thinking it could cut someone because the edges are a little rough and if you stepped on it, it could conceiveably cut your foot.
Do you heat up the wax afterwards or does it just fill right in?
Anybody else have ideas, in case i can't find the right match in my 48 colors box?  |

No I dont need to heat it at all. I go with the lighter color in deep and scratch the darker color over it making it look exactly like the floor. I fixed wood floors in rentals like this and no one was the wiser.
;P
When you buff it out with a soft cloth it blends it all in. Really rub it well like the way you would handpolish silver.

So before I draw on my floor with crayons  , are there any other suggestions on how to fix the gouge? Just hoping for a few more opinions before I tackle this. |

I just had my hardwood floors sanded and refinished. The guys filled the cracks and holes with this wood putty/filler stuff and smoothed it down with a putty knife. It looks really good. I can't even see the places they patched while I'm standing up. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes and tell them your problem they will lead you to the wood putty and explain how to fix it yourself. I'm not saying you couldn't use the crayon method, but this is an easy, inexpensive fix that you could do yourself.

You can get wax crayons in all sorts of colors at Lowe's. We just put hardwoods in the family room this past weekend. So now our entire main level is hardwood. The contractor who helped us put it the flooring showed me to just fill in scratches with a wax crayon and then rub off the excess with a green pad by scotchbrite.

Fill the gouge with tinted wood putty and then blend with a crayon.

You might try putting a slightly damp cloth over the gouge and go over it with a hot iron. Sometimes the steam will raise the gouge right out - sometimes it won't.
They sell tinted wood putty and touch up crayons at HD & Lowes.
