I have an old home with no fireplace and I want to purchase one of these mostly for the look. I also want to use the heat feature on some of those snowy nights on the weekend or when I learn that the schools will be closed the next day

Does anyone have one of these? Do you notice a big change in your electric bill? How do you like it? Pros and Cons.

You *might* save some money with that but that's only if you place it one room and turn down your primary heat. If you have individual thermostats in every room it's pretty pointless for any savings.

They do make gas and propane stoves that can be power vented for easy install without a chimney that will work much better than that with real flame.

You'd also have to compare what your electric rates are against your primary heat source.

Thanks- I was starting to wonder if I would get any responses.

I have only one thermostat and my house runs on Oil heat.
I just want it more for the look but was wondering if I would see much of an increase on my electrical bill when I do use the stove for heat.

I've been told that I wouldn't want to use it too often for it because electricity is expensive. Just want to get more opinions from those of you who have used one.

I am thinking of getting a gas fireplace w/propane tanks. I was thinking just like you about a wood burning stove for the effect. I just came from a home with a fireplace and now I moved into one without it. I really miss it!! We have oil heat and one thermostat too. It's radiator heat and the house gets extremely warm, so I have decided not to go with the wood burning stove or I will be a roast marshmellow. I have a friend who raves about the propane gas fireplace. That's the route I'm going. I want the effect more than the heat.

You can easily determine the rate at which it consumes electricity which depends on how many watts it is and your electric rate:

How much electricity does my stuff use?

I beleive most of those heaters are in the 1500 watts range, if you ran it 4 hours a day for 6 months and you're paying 11 cents a kilowatt the cost to run it is $119 for that time period.

Thanks, that's helpful. This particular one is 1350 watts, I guess that's even better
