You've probably seen them stacked high to the sky at city ports, left empty after traveling around the world carrying furniture, appliances and other household goods.

These guys aren't the first to come up with the idea. Several of them have sprouted up around here. Make pretty stout homes. One I know of made it through hurricane ike with flying colors. The steel framing on those boxes is really strong.

The US has been using those in Iraq and Afghanistan as housing for years now. One shipping container buried underground with stairs to the surface level container, which has a window and a door.

um let's just say it had nothing on this:

it was one shipping container and my bunk bed was the span of the back wall and my room mates bunkbed was along the side toward the front. i had about 20 sf most of which was bed and wall locker. there was an air conditioning vent that blew cold air in with the force of a jet engine. we tried to cover up the thing with tape and it either blew it off or got pretty hot. but i only had to deal with about 2 months of that. the 10 months before that was spent in a tent with a door that wouldnt stay closed which would cause me to have to tip my cot to pour the sand off before i went to sleep at night ; )

but i'm not complaining, wouldn't take it back.

Love these things! I have built a site around the concept. Containers are some of the most useful things to come out of China. I am working on building one myself. Maybe 2000+ sq ft. I just need to find the right piece of land to do it. My site about these cool things: http://containerist.com
