We just went to look at one today, and it seemed so solid and cozy. Are there any drawbacks that stone house swellers on here have encountered?

I had one. I never should have sold it. I bought a rundown badly in need of repairs and updates 3100 sq ft. house. Two story. It had been built in 1931.
The easiest part to fix up was power washing the stone. I didn't need to get paint or siding. Even the pointing (cement holding the stone) was solid. I only had to paint the window frames trim.
It was quiet, solid, and built. The redo was easy with rewiring and plumbing issues.
I was flipping houses at the time and it was the easiest, fastest flip I ever did.
You may not be looking at flipping, but I will tell you to look at the pointing and make sure the foundation is solid. No cracks or splits in the walls. Then your good to go....I think forever.
the only drawback I ever had was I could not hear people driving up. I was totally dependent on the doorbell unless I was watching. I think that was a good thing.

My folks live in a stone house. They love it and I think it's incredibly beautiful. I don't think there's any special upkeep and I bet the house will last forever.

If I could afford one (not typical construction in my area) I would have one. My dream is to live in the mountains in a home made of all log and stone. One day....
As a building inspector, there is no better method of building a house imo than stone.

I would imagine that stone house would be cold. Is that a misconception? It seems like the castles in Europe were always made of stone and characterized as cold and cave-like.

I thought it might be cold too, but I was wrong! We were in there for almost an hour, (very friendly realtor, ), and the furnace only kicked on once for a brief run. It was toasty warm. I noticed the window sills were deep, about 7 or 8 inches deep, and that's good. The temperature was in the twenties, and it was a bit windy, but I never even felt a draft. Two types of heat, six acres, this place is lookin' really good.

Buy it! I think the only reason they don't make them any more is because labor is too expensive!
I am DYING for one to come along in my pricerange.
Buy it buy it buy it. The house sounds wonderful. My parent's house can be a little chilly at times, but that's only because it's surrounded by mature trees and shaded from sunlight. Otherwise it's as warm as any other house. Did I say buy the house? Buy the house

If I read you right, I think you said we should buy the house!

Thanks everyone for your input.
