desertsun41: we're doing a "high end" kitchen with painted white and stained alder cabinets built by a local custom cabinet maker. i can assure you he is in fact "real proud" of his product, as am i. it also so happens his price came in far less than anything provided by a retail cabinet shop (plain & fancy, kraftmaid, crown pointe). why? because i'm not paying a markup for a middle man (ie: YOU), plus the overhead is lower for a smaller shop. i've done this a few times so i can pretty much guarantee i know by now what i'm doing. this is The Big One. this kitchen i've been designing in my head for five years. i would never trust a project this size with a cabinet showroom. we're building a new home and the cabinet maker is doing ALL the cabs: bathrooms, mud room, library, offices, entertainment centers ...everything. you can also bet that with a project of this size there is no extra money for any extra overhead which comes along with a showroom seller.

Kootr has it down pat. i am not interested in best sellers or what is "popular" in the way of sales. i'm doing CUSTOM which means i don't want chevy or ford. mercedes isn't even sneaking through.
i'm sorry to be so blunt, but you're not even close to understanding what goes on in a high end custom home. and i'm actually a little embarrassed for you by reading some of your comments.

"Cheap or custom cabinets will usually have no identification at all. They ain't real proud of their product."

are you KIDDING me?!

Hey, DS41, I'm on your side on this one..... Now I have a question, and I'm ready for my lecture...
Our home is about five years old, large kitchen, lots of cabinets. They are is perfect condition, but are the standard old blah honey oak.
We are installing new tile floors and granite counter top. We would like to go with a more modern color, perhaps cherry or something, the color has yet to be determined.
We had a gentleman come over today that was trying to sell us on re facing. He would have all of the doors made from scratch, and then put a facing on all surface areas. I don't want to cut corners, but if his method is good, it cuts the cost in half, or more. We are going to go visit his showroom to see examples of refaced cabinets. What are your thoughts on re facing...?
Short of a second quote, how do we determine if we are getting a good price or not. It always concerns me to have someone come to the house to give an estimate. I believe vendors price according to the neighborhood. In other words, if you live in a nicer area, the price goes up. That may just be my paranoia, but I have that belief for a time.
We have 35 doors, and 20 drawer faces, and quite a bit of surface area, and without too much time spent evaluating the situation, he popped up with $9k. He said it would take four or five weeks to get everything ready, and with two people working, about a week to do the work...
I realize without seeing and measuring our project, you're left with just a WAG, but shoot me an opinion. If more facts are needed, we'll put some together....

PS, do you make house calls to California..? I think I owe you a beer....

After skimming through the middle pages of this thread, I have a question similar to the OP's questions. I just recently bought a house (built in 2000) that has cabinets that look almost identical to the original. That plain white color, but the cabinets look fine.

Anyhow, we're already planning on dark granite and a tile backsplash for contrast, but I want to spice up the doors. Are there any online companies that just sell the cabinet doors? I wanted to replace mine with doors that have the glass/framing in them. I think it'd be great to have a piano black/white theme with the counters and cabinets, but I really like the look of the glass cabinet doors.

So, does anyone know an online site that lists and sells cabinet doors? Every time I search google, I can never just find a site with a catalog that I can browse through and just buy doors easily; they're all stores that you have to call and have estimate, and blah blah. I just want to replace a few doors in my kitchen on my own and be done with it. Any ideas?

I have Siematic cabinets(German and high quality)...I am adding Ikea beech cabinets for a new island.. My Siematic cabinets are white and beech and certainly not out of style...it's comtemp and shaker(beech) look. Ikea is European and is up to standards while great on price. They have granite and corian etc countertops too. You can get any countertops from any dealer if you wish. Becareful which granite you get...are different levels of quality (some have radon). Choose better hardware if you want. Ikea uses inches and can easily be mixed. Why pay thousands more....upgrade your floors or backsplash.
