I was cleaning out the nasty windows in my unfinished basement today. And I got to thinking how insecure they are. The house was built in the 70s and the windows have two eyelets you pull from the top of the window. Then the window hinges out and you pull the window out.
There are no locks at all. So, you could easily push the window in. I have tried searching the internet for locks. But I couldn't find any.
About the only thing I could think off is putting a screw into the metal frame in front of the window to prevent their opening.
You could do what I did. First, I cut some wire mesh and fastened it around each pane. Then I bolted in steel bars to each window. So, a burglar would have to get through the screen, through the glass, through the mesh and finally through the steel bars, which I have hung pieces of metal which would make a racket.
My windows have window wells so the bars are not very visible at a casual glance.
We had a guy who was breaking into houses via basement windows like yours. He would then cut the electricity off, thus luring the homeowner downstairs where he would tie them up.
