I think the best defense we have is choosing to live in an extremely low crime area. Been here over 5 years and have yet to hear of any crime in the vicinity, other than a few vandalism incidents.
I can agree with that. We live 3 miles from our nearest neighbor.

Even the UPS man knows I'll be greeting him as he comes down the driveway. We placed the home so it would be visible to a busy neighbor family. We also put it back away from the street by 300' to avoid casual passersby, and have the foundation high enough that getting in windows isn't a possibility. I have video from motion sensing cameras going to a couple of old VCRs just in case I need evidence, but I think when the neighbors saw me plink a rabbit at the base of the skull at over 200' with a single shot air rifle, and then saw my targets with the tight grouping lying around, word got out.

I live in a 'bad area', according to a lot of locals who are now living in more 'expensive' or 'trendier' neighborhoods. my best defense are fake window sensors, front/back yard signs, I switch cars and leave one on the driveway and a few motionsensor'd lights and chimes. I also dont look like the easiest target in my neighborhood. no breakins in my community tho for 3 years. I might get a gun tho just for experience

I have a security system and motion lights. I have a family member who is in the security business so I have everything The one thing he told me is that most people with security systems run to turn them off when they go off..........big mistake. Your just telling the robbers sorry for the loud noise but come on in. Let the siren keep going even though it can blow your eardrum out and hopefully scare the intruders away.

Interesting point, but I would look at it this way....alarm keeps going off, nobody home - get in and get out. If alarm is shut off, someone is home and he might have a gun as a backup......

I have two dogs....one who has the potential to be mean, barks, growls, etc. around strangers at first, but he's only 35 lbs. The other one is a pit-lab mix, about 95 lbs., who would probably lick the robber to death then show him where Mommy's valuables are. I always hope that the robber just hears the one growling and assumes it's the bigger dog.....

Also, got a glock in my dresser, with the loaded clip separate.

When all else fails, I have Fui. He's just a cat, but seriously, you would be scared. You should see what he's done to my furniture thus far.

Well, the reason why I turn it off is to hear if something is moving around. The dogs will go off too and that can act as my deterrent....

But if someone is willing to try to come into my house, the alarm isn't gonna stop them, but my bullets will....lol

170 pound English Mastiff (sweet but protective) Grrrr.

We have a large family so it is rare that the house is completely empty.

We have neighbors who know us so if somone who is not us is at our house, they call the police.

We live on an island, so there is no easy way for a bad guy to escape. There are only two bridges and they will shut down if requested by the police. Also since we live on an island, people do not just happen to drive by and see a good place to rob. If they want to rob here, they have to make a special trip. Being a small community, strangers may get pulled over just to find out what they are doing. Our police are very bored so they get a little overenthusiastic at times.

For fire, we have the mandated hard wired smoke detector system. We hate it. It is stupid and worthless. WHen it goes off (which it does regularly) everyone tends to just put a pillow over their head and wait for someone else to turn it off. I make them all get up and go outside anyway, but it is a battle. They often will not move until I yell at them (I have a megaphone). The things just do not work well. They either go off all the time, or not at all. Over a third of the ones we bought did nto work when we put smoke directly into them. Others go off for no reason at all. Some work for a while but then malfunction. I think that they are all pretty much made in China and junky. I am constantly returning and replacing them. When they are linked as required, when one goes off, they all go off. Then you cannot tell which one went off and it is hard to locate the problem. Hate them. Still we keep them all connected and operating. You never know when they might save your life.

We had some co2 detectors. I bought four of them. Good ones from the major brands (Kidde Nighthawk, I forget the others). I tested them and they did not seem to work. I took them outside and held them in the exhause from a car, they still did not alarm. I returned them and got new ones - same problem. I just returned them and gave up. No reason to create a false sense of security for something that does nto work at all.
