A lot of noise comes into my room from the kitchen/laundry area and when my roommate is in there it sometimes wakes me up because I'm a light sleeper...any ideas on how I can soundproof my room? The noise mainly comes through the door area. I thought about getting some weatherstriping and adding it to the doorframe...any other thoughts? I'm also throwing a towel down at the bottom of the door. Thanks

The cheapest and fastest method are ear-plugs.

Get a white noise machine. Or a fan. They are great at reducing noise and keeping a even tone to stay asleep by.

or you can tear out the walls, rebuilt them on a double wall with staggered studs on each side, put in foam or cellulose insulation and use sound dampening panels underneath the drywall; then double up the door and /or use a soft core metal door. That would only cost $20,000 or so.

Earplugs are about $.060. But I dont like them, I can hear my heart beating. I just put a pillow over my head. Serves as a bllindfold and earplugs all at once. Cheap to since I already have lots of pillows.

A lot depends on how much trouble and how much expense you are willing to throw at this problem.
Since the door is probably hollow core, the noise will go thru that like crazy. If you don't want to change out the door, a cheapo fix is to get a couple cans of great stuff foam. Get a drill bit the size of the nozzle and drill a hole thru the top of the door and the bottom. Not thru the face of the door, but on the edge of the door. Then squirt the foam in and let it expand. Most hollow core doors are divided in half, so if you go from the top and the bottom, it should get most of it. Keep in mind that this may not work with the type of door you have, but it should work with most hollow core doors.
Adding the towel at the bottom helps too.

Seeing the title of the thread, definitely did not think kitchen noise was the culprit...

Silly me.
