The only time you should tip them is if you ask them to do something above and beyond their normal duties.

Or, if you share desertsun41's values and like the way they wear their pants.
So you can say the same about Waiters, Craps Dealers at casinos, and so on. They get paid by their employer too. Do you tip them?

I seemed to have hit a sore spot with you. If life is treating you badly then you too should wear pants that fit you.

No, I have no idea how many times that happens to you.

Is it always the same big fat sloppy Plumber with his crack showing, or are there lots of big fat sloppy Plumbers with their cracks showing that just happen to show up at these houses at the same time as you do?

A tip is a bonus for exceptional service. If they give it, tip them. They are not entitled to a tip.

To me dressing like a gang banger is not exceptional service. If they smoke in or near my house or furniture or spit tobacco juice on my property, their tip drops (or disappears). If they scratch the furniture, no tip. If they place it for me or do something extra (one guy reparied a door that had a broken hinge so it woudl be easier for him to get through), then they might get more than $20. The guys who moved our whole household got $150 each withthe leader getting $200. I later learned that that may have been low. Oops.

To me being polite and being presentable is just as important as the skills needed to perform the job. I am in peoples homes every day. Do you know how many times I'm in a house and the door bell rings, the homeowner opens the door and there is a big fat sloppy Plumber with his crack showing who says: "Yea I'm the Plumber, whataya want?". If you were a single woman would you let that in your house?

If you are going to go into peoples homes for a living you have to dress and act the part. And if an employer hires punks who dress like gang thugs then shame on them too.

I agree. If I am going to give moeny away, I want it to go to someone whom I am happy that they have it. I do not want to contribute to someone's drug or alchohol problem. Although dressing like a banger does nto necessarily mean a drug or alchohol problem, that is the message that it sends. It says that this person does nto care enough about me or about their job to put on some decent clothing rather than wearing something offensive. the one time that I had gang banger types deliver something, I did not let them into the house. I just had them leave it on the porch and I moved it later with help from the kids.

Sorry, your appearance says a lot about you. that is just how it is. Yes decent people might choose to waer gang banger outfits, but there is no good reason for it if you are expecting admission into someone's house. Gan banger attire is just that - gang banger attire. It says I am a gang banger or I want to be one" You are free to make that statement. However having made that statement, you are not free to enter my house. Nor are you entitled to any of my money beyond the agreed amount (unless you have a gun).

Right on. Several other people agreed with me too behind the scenes as well as publicly. Only fat fred does not agree so I guess that makes all of us wrong.

Like it or not, right or wrong, we judge people by the way they look. And if you dress like a thug then I dont blame homeowners for not letting them into their home.

I have people come into my store all the time dressed like Omar The Tent Maker made their pants for them and I toss them out while telling them to buy some choths that fit them. And wearing that hat in the store while looking for work shows disrespect. Wearing it crooked shows disrespect to Joe Cap who invented the baseball hat and makes them look like a total fool.

I’m not saying it’s “wrong” to pre-judge workers using culturally biased, irrelevant, emotionally based, criteria.

But, it seems more useful, and indicative of a higher order of thinking, to judge workers on the quality of their work rather than the style of their trousers.

So if I round up six gang bangers from Detroit, you will let them come into your house with you and not worry about anything until you see the quality of their work so that you can judge them by work quality alone?

By any chance, are these Six Gangbangers From Detroit that you are so afraid of any relation to the Big Fat Sloppy Plumber With His Crack Showing that keeps following desertsun41 around?

You are correct. FattyFred is just upset because he feels we have mocked on his dress code. He would not let the gangbangers in his house any quicker then the rest of us.

When I hire, appearance holds the same importance as skill. Without one the other is useless.
