I guess you get what you pay for and boy did I pay. I bought an ultra-cheap Homelite string trimmer back in Feb of this year and yesterday as I was trimming for the final time of the season, it started to blow out smoke/oil and smelled like burning metal. It's ragged out...already. I have six acres, but really only cut and trim three acres of it. I need something that is heavy duty, no matter the cost. Anyone have suggestions? Any pro's out there? What do you use? And no suggestions for a rechargable trimmer. Those are a joke for anyone with a yard larger than .5 acres.

Out of the four or five different services I see come through my neighborhood they all have one thing in common- the string trimmer, edger, and hedger are all the same- Stihl.
That said a lot to me. So, I went and spent a few "hundred" dollars and bought the multi use tool. The head is the motor, then there's the string trimmer attachment, edger attachment, hedger and I also got the mini cultivator. That thing is great for preparing color beds.
The whole thing has been extremely reliable. The only complaint- my arms and shoulders are killing me after an hour or so with the hedger.

Same thing here K'ledgeBldr. ALL the lawn and garden companies use Stihl equipment for their trimmers and yard tools. Also all the parks departments and most cemetery maintenance crews use Stihl as well in this area.

Yes, the Stihl brand I have had great luck with it, although they are pricey.

I just looked at the Stihl website. I think I will go with one of their professional trimmers. It will be around $350, but it might be well worth it!!!

I once had a Ryobi 4-stroke. It was extremely exhausting carrying that beast.

Stihl! Heard nothing but good about them. Personally I now use an electric troy-built, but I have such a small yard that it's no hassle. Any bigger yard and I would have a Stihl.

I did landscaping in the 1990s and wouldn't trade my 15 year old ECHO trimmer for a new Stihl. Personal preference, but I've eventually replaced everything with the ECHO products, and have never had to replace one of them.
