it looks to me like it was sprayed on top of something else. it is thin mud and it was knocked down, the service probably was painted at one point. Texture does this on painted walls. it looks like there is background to it which makes me believe there is a coating behind it. there is no pattern involved in that.
Im guessing a lot of people like that 'textured' look. But my preference is a smooth, semi-gloss wall. Easy clean-up, easy touch-up and easy to see if there are any problems anywhere. F lat paint and/or texture, no thanks.
My guess from looking at the photos is that it was gone with a mop cut to half length then stomped. This was very common. I see bubbles so I don't think it was sprayed. It looks definite like stomped to me at least.i would also try different stomps to match.I personally prefer the textured finish over a smooth finish in drywall. If a smooth finish it needs to be palster to last IMO.
That looks like stomped walls that were then knocked down. It leaves a much heavier pattern than say spray testure that is knocked down. There are alot of stomping technics depending on what is used to stomp the textrue on.They are all stomped with texture then when it looses its shine a wide blade is to lightly to flatten and even out the height. If you going to match then practice on scape sheet rock pannels. Not really that hard.
