I borrowed a neighbor's and liked it enough to almost buy one for myself. Easy to use, convenient, saves the walking back and forth to set the end of a tape then move it elsewhere. It doesn't hurt that it could be considered a gadget and Lord knows I love me some gadgets.
I have a 100' reel tape that I generally use for such things. We've got our fair share of obstacles in our back yard (Trees, deck rails, trees, storage shed, trees, etc.) and it can be a bit of a pain trying to find that perfect spot to avoid everything. If not, you're tacking a bunch of smaller measurements together. I didn't have that issue with the laser version in the brief time I used it.
He bought his online at Home Depot's site, I believe it was a Ryobi and was under $200. Checked quick and was right about the brand but it was actually $150. The sole reviewer said it had a range of around 150' and accuracy was around +/- 1/16".
Yep, I would buy one for myself but would have a hard time justifying the cost to the DW with all the stuff I already have plus the fact that measuring devices have a tendency to disappear while in my possession.
I was watching some reality DIY show awhile back and the guy on it was the same way. He had his wife go to a store and buy something like 8 tape measures for a project because he knew he would be misplacing them. My wife said "That's
you!"
