We just moved in to our rented home in NM, where the water is very hard. The dishes come out of the dish washer with a white film on them, and the water from the tap tastes horrible.

We don't want to buy a softener since we rent this place, but I've read bad things about renting units (they softeners are old units.) This house is new and is preplumbed.

Does anyone have experience with renting water softeners?

Your first conversation should be with your landlord. Explain the circumstances and see if he/she is willing to install softener (you of course would be responsible for maintenance and supplies).
If you run into objection, maybe you could use that as a reason to break lease, if it totally unbearable.

Culligan does or at least did rent water softeners, they are on the hook to provide a working unit that meets your needs or you can "fire" them. We have a water softener (Sears) from back before 1991 and it works fine.

Full disclosure - I have never rented a water softener.

We have rented softeners in the past and have never had a problem with them. It really doesn't matter if they are new or old-chances are they would put in a new one in a new install though. They still have to provide all the service (for free) for the softener. You will have to pay for the salt though. Most of the rentals we had were already there when we moved in and we just started paying the rent on them. I can't remember ever having to get one fixed. We own the one in our house right now and just put $150 into it to fix a valve or something. The valve was about $8 and the rest was labor and mileage charges.

I think it was in the $15/month range, but this was 10 years ago or so. It isn't expensive. Check with Culligan when they come out, they often have salt delivery too. They will come on a regular schedule and put the salt in the softener for you.

Make sure to get your landlord's consent in writing. If you have a water well, make sure you have enough water pressure. The salesman will not tell you that.

Softeners work with as little as 20 psi. Most homeowners today won't live with less than a minimum of 30 psi.

So IYO, where is the problem that a sales person should mention pressure?

Oh I didn't know you could rent a softener. The water here, it's city water and it's aweful, leaves deposits on anything. I've watered the plants outside and have seen drops of white left over on the leaves. I had a birdbath outside that I never did fill because of the water but the neighbors kept watering over the fence so it ended up with water rings even though if I saw water coming over I'd go right out and tip it to keep the water out. I ended up just having to put it away after a good scrubbing. We do have a fridge pitcher and a brita filter though for drinking water. I rent so if there was anything needing done I'd have to buy or rent it. Good to know one could rent one though.

The dude came and we can rent for $30 a month. Plus the salt will cost roughly another $20 a month (4 people) at Walmart or Home Depot or wherever.
