A house I am looking at just did some floor re-surfacing. Somehow, the floor color turned into much darker and the pattern on the floor became much more pronounced. On the good side, it's now very shiny and looks new.

Some may think it's pretty but it hurts my eyes. Do you guys think this is done right and it looks good?

Here's before and after pictures.

I'm no expert by any means - but I swear the first picture looks like its cherry or some other type of lighter wood, with a much straighter grain.

The bottom picture is oak, maybe even pine?? - with a dark stain, high gloss finish. I think it looks fine, personally, especially as the first rise of the stair is wrapped to match.

Maybe its just my eyes playing tricks as the photos are taken from a different angle with the boards running different directions..

Aesthetically I think the "after" picture is fine, but you're the one who's going to have to live with it... so if you're not happy with it, figure out what kind of trouble its worth to you to fix it.

Did they stain it as part of the refinishing process? Sure looks like it.

This might be why.

These 2 are exactly the same floors but from different rooms. They finished the living room but left dinning room untouched. they used to be the same color.

They probably stained it to mask some water marks or other problem that wuld not sand out. I do not see any problem with it, but then we really canot tell much from photographs. Maybe if you had about 50 pictures of each floor shot at different angles and with different types of light, but even then I doubt that anyone can tell if they did a good job without actually seeing the floor.

I'm certain they stained it with a darker stain. There's no other reason for the darker color. It's all Oak.

Honestly though, I'm not sure why they would have done that. Did you tell them you wanted it stained darker? If not, I don't think they should have done it without either your direction or consent.

I'm also a little puzzled why they did one room but not the other...
